Cut Shot Volleyball Skill Development Progression

Team Grade Fundamental Skills Position Skills Typical Offense Recruitment
13-Elite 7th grade and under Intensive coverage of basic passing, setting, spiking, and serving skills. Key moves and techniques associated with each position presented and drilled. 4-2 (2 setters; Setter sets from the right front position) Awareness of recruitment as a long term objective joined with importance on academic progress.
14-Elite/Select 8th grade Increased emphasis of basic skills with attention on game application. Knowledge of position moves and techniques with a demonstrated ability to apply in game situations. 4-2 or 6-2 (2 setters; Setter sets from the right back position) Awareness of recruitment as a long term objective joined with importance on academic progress.
15-Elite/Select 9th grade Basic skills at upper limits of age group with focus on technique. Blocking technique added to skill set. Application in game situations consistently effective. Application of positional skill set in game situations, and development of offensive setting strategy 6-2 or 5-1 (1 Setter: Setter sets from both right front and right back position) Introduction to the relationship between competition, commitment to athletic accomplishment, and educational goals and aspirations.
16-Elite/Select 10th grade Mastery of basic skills. Adaptation to court awareness and setting strategy. Use of positional plays and techniques in game situations support effective offensive setting schemes. 6-2 or 5-1 Beginning to formulate recruitment plan, identification of educational goals, and initiation of communication with college coaches.
17-Elite/Select 11th grade Contiuation of focus on technique and reinforcement of game-offensive strategy Competitive and effective offensive setting strategy coupled with defense driven plays. 6-2 or 5-1 Active execution of recruitment plan, exploration of alternatives and options, and use of decision-making tools to finalize college objectives.
18-Elite 12th grade Highest level of skill. Preparation for next level of play. Mastery of multiple offensive attacks with consistency with each play 6-2 or 5-1 College commitment and or acceptance.
